Project Abstract for Phase II TTC
Northern Rockies Educational Services, Inc. (NRES), the Montana Office of
Public Instruction (OPI), Total Educational Solutions in Technology, Inc. (T.E.S.T.),
and Montana’s Public Universities School of Education are partnering to address
the needs of Montana’s school districts, their administrators, teachers, and
students. This is the second phase of a three phase project. The goals of Taking
Technology to the Classroom (TTC), Phase II are to: 1) Provide Montana teachers
the opportunity to participate in coursework that satisfies the requirements of
Montana's APSC Technology in Education notation; and 2) Develop and implement an
effective assessment tool to measure teachers' 21st Century skills and practical
use of instructional technology.
Phase II builds on the capacity and commitment of the partners that was
established during Phase I (FIPSE FY2008 Award Number P116Z080021). In order to
achieve the Phase II goals, 6 objectives have been identified and aligned to
specific activities. Objective 1 involves the University partners completing the
course curriculum that will satisfy the APSC requirements. The partners will
offer these courses in the Fall, Spring and Summer sessions. Objective 2: 15
teachers will be recruited from Montana’s five Regional Educational Service
Agencies to enroll in the new curriculum. During Phase II, teachers will
participate in the courses and complete course evaluations. Objective 3:
provides these teachers practical technical support (online and onsite) to
successfully integrate their new knowledge and skills into the classroom.
Teachers will report on their level of satisfaction with the technical support
and their success with integrating technology into the classroom. Objective 4:
T.E.S.T. will update the assessment tool that is designed to effectively measure
in-service teacher’s 21st Century skills and practical use of instructional
technology in the classrooms. This tool will be piloted with non-project
teachers to assess its validity and reliability before it is used with the 15
teachers. Objective 5 involves collecting baseline data from the 15 teachers in
order to assess their comfort and skill levels prior to the coursework. These
data will inform the partners about areas of weakness and technical support
needed. Objective 6: T.E.S.T. will develop a pre-service TAGLIT assessment tool.
The university partners will pilot this tool with their pre-service teachers to
assess its validity and reliability.
At the conclusion of TTC Phase II, 15 Montana in-service teachers will have
completed 9 of the required 20 credits towards the APSC Technology in Education
notation. Additionally, the in-service TAGLIT will be updated and will have been
used to collect baseline data from the cohort teachers, and the pre-service
TAGLIT will have been finalized for use by the University partners in Phase III.
The goal of the evaluation is to provide the project partners and the funding
agent with useful information about the implementation and progress achieved
during Phase II while providing a chronological history of the model development
and the lessons learned when implementing the TTC model.
